Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’, commonly known as Creeping Phlox, is a vibrant, mat-forming evergreen perennial that adds a striking splash of colour to garden landscapes. In mid to late spring, it becomes adorned with masses of vivid scarlet-red, star-shaped flowers, creating a stunning contrast against its dark green, needle-like foliage. This low-growing plant is ideal for ground cover, rock gardens, and cascading over walls.

Height: 10–15 cm

Spread: 30–60 cm

Position: Full sun

Soil: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils

Flowering Period: April to May

Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H7)

Key Features:

Ground Cover: Forms a dense, low mat that suppresses weeds effectively.

Drought Tolerant: Once established, it withstands dry conditions, making it suitable for xeriscaping.

Wildlife Friendly: Attracts butterflies and other pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity.

Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care, thriving in poor, well-drained soils.

Care Tips:

Pruning: Shear back after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage dense growth.

Soil: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot; thrives in sandy or gravelly soils.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system; thereafter, occasional watering is sufficient.

Companion Planting: Pairs well with other spring bloomers such as tulips and daffodils, and complements plants like sedum and ornamental grasses in rock gardens.

Incorporating Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’ into your garden provides early-season colour and texture, making it a valuable addition to various garden settings.
